'Amelia (Joni Mitchell)
'Amelia (Joni Mitchell)
‘Amelia’ was a song off a 1976 Joni Mitchell album. I had casually listened to this aplenty, and found something hauntingly beautiful about the song’s arrangement and lyrics.
Forty years later I revisited this ‘restless seed’ still waiting to germinate from my soul. I created a 24x36 (muchly the same here) of my vision, and applied it to canvas. I did some painting on it, but mostly pasted mosaic collage elements. I was not happy with the results, so painted over the entire canvas with a new project.
At the fifty-year mark, I had a compelling desire to try it again, since the original design was saved on a JPEG. This time, I only painted Amelia, (collaged in from a famous photo) and did some additional tweaking on the lyric separation. I left the design as it was from the 2015 failure.
Clearly, Joni was so inspired by Amelia Earhart. Clearly I was so inspired from Joni being inspired. Lastly, the lyric, the seed, is so deeply embedded, I think I know most of it by heart. Poetry at its best.
My collaborator, Judy B is aware of the legacy, and has ideas to make this a continuum. I do not wish to influence her, but glad to be in the same creative process with Joni and Amelia, and now John and Judy, and we will see what residual adds a link to the project chain.
