Hana is a fictional character (i.e. we made her up) from the first novel thought to have been written: The Tale of Genji. She is never named in the novel (she is in fact Lady Murasaki Shikibu the author) yet plays a central role in the story’s narration, much as does Shaharazad in “1001 Nights”. Hana had an insider’s view of Japan’s 10th century Imperial Court. Her work was important to the creation of Japanese writing.
Richetts and Bridge used fused glass and silks to fashion Hana. Their collaboration process began with the belief that together, they could melt the silo into which artists so often find themselves, and produce more beauty, more joy, more delight.
