“Mentors: Collaboration and Inspiration” Prospectus

Co-Curated by Cathy Carey and Judy Berberian

"Mentors: Collaboration and Inspiration" is an art and poetry exhibition celebrating the enriching dynamics of intergenerational co-mentorship, creative influence, and inspiration. The motivation behind this exhibit is to bring together diverse creative individuals, fostering an exciting energy that propels innovative projects. Through collaborative brainstorming, artists and poets are inspired, encouraged, and introduced to new ways of thinking and creating.

This exhibit creates an opportunity for participants to purposefully explore collaborative efforts across generations or draw inspiration from other creatives. By doing so, they give and receive energy that culminates in the production of unique artwork and poetry for this show. We believe that through this process, participants will not only create exceptional pieces but also forge meaningful connections and gain invaluable insights into their creative practices.

As part of your submission, you are invited to write up a description of your collaborative effort on how you are inspired by each other in creating your piece. You will have the opportunity to share your experience at the reception and on several of the docent tours. We’ll host opportunities for local residents to respond to your work through making, discussing, and viewing programs.

Participation Guidelines for Artists and Poets:

  1. Collaborative Artwork and Poetry:
    • Option 1: Collaborate with an artist at least 20 years younger or older. Each artist will inspire and mentor the other to create a new artwork or poem, or make one piece together.
    • Option 2: Collaborate with any artist to create a piece for the exhibit.
    • Option 3: Artists and Poets can work together to create a piece in either genre

Artists who choose to collaborate will be invited to share a short talk about their collaborative process at the reception, and at docent tour opportunities.

  1. Inspired Artwork and Poetry:
    • Create a work inspired by another artist, musician, writer, or other creative figure, without direct collaboration.

Artists and poets are invited to submit previous works alongside their co-created or inspired pieces. Submit entries on the art call site under your name and, if applicable, under your collaborative name. Submissions are free and limited to 3 entries per name.

Collaboration Example:
Artist A collaborates with Artist B. Both can submit 3 entries each under their individual names and 3 entries under their combined names.

Inspired Example:
Artist C, inspired by Matisse, can submit 3 entries under Artist C.

Selection Process In choosing the accepted pieces, the created artwork and the statements about the collaboration will be considered. The purpose is to be influenced by someone who is different than you, how the experience generated for you a new look at your process.

Jurors: Cathy Carey, Front Porch Gallery Director of Programming and Judy Berberian, Front Porch Gallery Programming Manager will jury the show and are available for assistance during your creation process. Artists can work together at the gallery on our making tables during the collaboration.
