Lorrie Teates

A fiber enthusiast from earliest years, I discovered felting in all its various forms, I have focused on painting with fiber using wool, silk, embellishing with thread, yarn, rope, beads and all sorts of materials. I am drawn to water and the sounds of the ocean, our most precious resource, in my color choices, returning again and again to the miracle of water.

Statement

We, Chrisanne Moats and Lorrie Teates, took an on hands collaborative approach to creating folk art using primarily upcycled objects. Chrisanne is an assemblage artist and brought her unique view of making 3D art to this project. Lorrie is a fiber artist working primarily with wool and silk fibers to create 2D art. Over several sessions we worked together, shared ideas, learned new skills, and broke out of our individual comfort zones. What emerged from the project is a unique, colorful combination of our individual talents.

Chrisanne suggested our story start with an old birdhouse and some discarded table legs. Lorrie jumped right in, finding discarded blue venetian blinds for the birdhouse roof. We worked well together as both our formats involve a tactile element. As we painted and felted with vibrant colors, glued our shared bits and pieces and some trouble shooting, our story came together. It was really fun creating this folk art birdhouse sewing box.
